10 things longboarders do wrong (until they wise...
This is an article from Carve magazine’s online site that I found a few years back. In the advent of an emerging number of longboarders joining line-ups all over the Philippines, I thought it would be a good idea to post it again here. :)  10 things longboarders do wrong (until they wise up) By Sam Bleakly 1. Hogging the sets Don’t take all the best waves. The World Stormrider Guide: Volume 3
A shameless plug.  The third Volume of The World Stormrider Guide trilogy came out on shelves in the Summer of 2009 (Western hemisphere). It is also available via Amazon.  It took almost 5 years to compile this book and over 10 years of work to complete the 3 Volume set. Together, they form by far the largest, most comprehensive and most beautiful guide to the World’s surf ever...

Results: 6th Aurora Surfing Challenge
I missed the Aurora Surfing Challenge this year (boo!) but hear from competitors and spectators that it was quite a show. Locals from Siargao, Lanuza, La Union and even Manila showed up for a shot at a finals berth and the grand prize.  Personally want to point out that JR Esquivel, who placed 3rd in the Men’s Open is actually a few years shy of turning 18. He is our very own version of Two...

Today's Surf Photo: Full Moon Surfing
Where: Baler, Aurora When: February 27, 2010 The session at the beach break, right in front of Bay’s Inn was really steady. No hassle, no fuss. All the peaks were breaking and we were able to spread out instead of crowd in. Nothing too big but definitely not small. And, a rare thing for Baler, not that windy either.  I was in the water until just before sunset and then had to come up to...

Camara Island: sort of
A longer entry some other time but for now suffice it to say that when you surf this island a fun little reef break (on the other side of the island), you inevitably leave with this: War scars in exchange for fun rights.

Today's Surf Photo: The Point, La Union
From the days before I owned a proper telephoto :)  Siargao’s Alex Comandante at sizeable Point during Rimat Ti Amianan in San Juan, La Union. This was the finals of Men’s Shortboard Open and this was - I believe - the start of his highest scoring wave.

Today's Surf Photo: Low Tide
Dead low tide at Cloud 9 means low tide. It’s not a joke.  I shot this during the 2008 Cloud 9 International and, if I remember correctly, the boys standing at the edge of the reef were waiting for the heat in progress to end so they could get their comp rashies. The dude in green on the left was a press photographer.  Color is a bit washed out. Sorry.

It's More Fun In The Philippines
The new tourism slogan for the Department of Tourism here in the Philippines is “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” — and I agree with them. There might be many things that do go wrong in this country what with the red tape, bureaucracy, poverty… BUT tthe truth of the matter is I can’t imagine wanting to live anywhere else but here.  I love traveling mainly...
